Another American curiosity

Recently I found this device on the inside of a boot (or trunk as the natives here call it ;-) ) of a car.





You gotta wonder....


I think it is probably related to some sort of legilative initiative or the result of yet another spectacular of lawsuit. So, either someone came up with a commendable idea like "We really have to reduce the number of kidnappings in this country!" Or, in the process of some practical joke, someone got locked in a boot of a car and then went on to sue the manufacturer for he could not open the boot from the inside.


However, looking at the nifty pictogram art raises the question as to how the poor person locked in a pitch dark boot is going to benefit from that......
